Wonky's Land of Nonsensical Musings

Month: January 2019

TWTW January 21st though the 27th: Winter

I took this picture walking home one night. It had snowed (obviously) and it was several degrees warmer than it had been when I went out. That happens a lot here during winter. It will be warmer in the middle of the night than during daylight hours. Next week I’ll tell you about the polar vortex we are currently under.

TWTW January14th through the 20th: Icemageddon not really Snowmageddon 2 nope, Jobu loves me not so much

Icemageddon, Not really

During the middle of the week we had dire warnings of Icemageddon. Two nights in a row they told use that freezing rain would cover the land in slippery death. Cars would crash, people would fall, nobody would be able to get to work. Each morning I woke up, and everything was fine.

Snowmageddon 2, Nope

Next up we had Snowmageddon part 2. At first the forecast called for 6-10 inches of snow guaranteed for Friday and Saturday. As the weekend drew closer it got downgraded to 4- 6 inches. But it was still supposed to be a proper blizzard with lots of wind and blowing snow.

I woke up Saturday morning to maybe an inch of snow.. and no more fell. It was windy and got cold but, Worst Blizzard Ever

Jobu Loves Me, Not So Much

I was sitting in my easy chair. I don’t remember if I was watching a tv show or playing a video game, but I had my headphones on and was absorbed I what I was doing. Suddenly a paw gently rested on my shoulder so as not to shock me. Jobu climbed into my lap and purred. He loves me I thought. He then sat on the arm of the chair as I petted him. He wanted to be near me. I was touched. I had to get up and get something. As soon as I stood up he jumped into the center of the chair to curl up and go to sleep. He didn’t love me. He just wanted the chair.

I got all excited. They warned us that probably 8 inches of snow would be falling Friday and Saturday. I waited eagerly for the first snowmageddon of 2019. I awoke to about 4 inches of snow. I nice covering but not quite enough for me. Luckily, they informed me that this was just round 1 and round 2 would come later on Saturday and drop another few inches.

In the afternoon I went for a walk to take some pictures around the area. The roads had all been cleared and it was a fun time. Oddly a bunch of the local businesses were closed. I mean the parking lots were plowed the roads were fine. They missed out on some customers.

The second wave of the snowmageddon ended up being a disappointment. Only about another inch of snow fell.

I still decided to stay home on Sunday and be frontiersee. I made another batch of cheese and some homemade bread.

Inspiring Quote of the Week

It is not enough to have good ideas, you have to act. If you need milk, do not sit on a stool in the middle of a field in the hope that a cow will pass by. -Curtis Grant

The day after I got home from my parents I got sick. Like a fever and everything. I suddenly had a sore throat and the snot.. ohh soo much snot. I used up two Kleenex boxes. It lasted for four days. I slept 14 hours the first day I was sick and at least 10 hours every other day. Not a good way to spend a break away from work.

As a Christmas gift I got a cheese making kit. So I made cheese. It tasted really good and wasn’t that hard to make.

New Year New Blog

Alternate Title: New Blog. Who Dis?

As you probably have noticed things have changed around here during the holidays. In 2013, after years of paying for a wordpress site I hardly ever blogged on, I moved my blog to the free blogger platform. I’ve moved back to wordpress and having the site hosted by a paid provider. I am not really sure why I did it. I have been telling myself it’s part of my de-googling my life. Blogger is owned by Google.

I tested everything on my computer before trying to make the transition. I installed WordPress 5 and followed these instruction to transfer over my stuff from blogger. Everything worked great. I didn’t redirect the old blog to the new one. You can still get to it at wonky73.blogspot.com. All the old links should work and just point to the new version of that post.

I did encounter some problems once I tried to move things to the live server. The first problem I encountered was getting the domain to point to the new server. I then had trouble getting the ssl cert I had gotten from Let’s Encrypt to work.

The most annoying thing that happened, is that the embedded videos didn’t come over. On my test version, everything copied over fine. But for some reason on the live version no embedded videos. I tried deleting everything and using different options for importing the old blog but they didn’t change anything. Looks like I will have to go back and re-embed all the videos. This isn’t the worst thing since I was planning on bringing back some old Music Mondays and adding an explanation as to why I chose that song. I also should catalog them so I can tell if I am doing a repeat.

When I switched from WordPress to blogger back in 2013 one of the things I missed was the WP themes. WP had so many great blogging themes. I can’t remember the name, but I used a theme that was free and almost completely customizable. Blogger had a bunch of themes from the mid-aughts that hadn’t been updated in years. I come back and yes there are a million themes for WP but most of them suck and aren’t for blogs. They are for basic business websites. They mimic the bootstrap look of having a big image and then three blocks beneath. Also, there are a bunch of one-off themes like Bob’s Wedding. I tried to use the filter option in the theme search but it’s still full of bootstrap clones. Maybe I’ll just make my own theme.

Finally, we gotta talk about this editor. I had an option when I installed to “Use old editor”. I foolishly chose the new editor. New is better, right? I don’t know where to begin. Maybe I’ll get used to it and there is reason why they think this is better. I usually write posts in another app and just copy and past them into the blog. I haven’t tried this yet.

Welcome to the new blog. Same as the old blog. Back to normal posting.
